CNN Airs M3iworks Interview on Exporting America

Surprising its reporter Nickie Bonner, M3iworks' CEO Linda Gold told CNN the company was continuing to survive the economic downturn without outsourcing its web development to India or China.

"You'd better create high value by your local presence, or innovate ideas that meet clients' emerging needs. Any service that can be commodotized will be. It's a fact of life. Programmers and software engineers in India make, on average, $15/hour, while their American counterparts earn anywhere from $40 to $120/hour. Clearly, if cost is the overriding consideration, American labor loses."

So what value does M3iworks' local presence provide? According to Gold, "Key events, such as product launches, can't be left to chance. That's why Sun Microsystems, for example, relies on the local M3iworks team to ensure web launches of all new hardware products are flawless. One of our customers likes to joke, "I want one throat to choke." Tough to find that throat in India."

How else does M3iworks keep clients local? Gold believes the look and feel of an organization's website needs to truly capture the culture of the organization-its people, its values, and its brand. "Before we design a site for a company, we immerse ourselves in the company's culture, and get an up-close and personal view of who they are, what they do, and what they want the world to know about them. Our sites reflect that high-touch aspect of design that you can't achieve remotely."

Gold also says the company promotes the use of interns to help reduce costs while providing opportunities for local college students to gain experience and exposure.
