Linda Gold Joins Valley Leaders for Economic Summit
When Valley leaders came together April 7 for the Silicon Valley Economic Summit, hosted by Congressman Mike Honda and the Silicon Valley Manufacturing Group, Linda Gold was there to speak on behalf of small business in these challenging times.
Joined by Bill Coleman of BEA Systems, Steve Adachi of Cisco, County Supervisor Liz Kniss, and Joe Coto, Superintendent from the East Side Union High School District, the panel expressed their distinct sector's concerns and challenges in conducting business here in our Valley, and joined in the discussion of how the private and public sectors can better work together to improve our suffering economy.
A third-generation Bay Area native, Linda reflected on M3iworks' 21-year presence in the Valley, expressing her affinity for the quality of life here, and her pride in Silicon Valley's economic influence, community activism, and philanthropy. But the serious challenges faced during this recession are making it tougher to sustain a business here. Linda challenged the public and private sector audience to address the escalating Workers Comp and healthcare crisis before we lose any more businesses in this valley, noting that cost increases were completely "out of control." Linda also stated that taxing services, a possible revenue source being discussed in Sacramento, and a possible payroll tax to fund local government needs, would pound yet "another nail in the coffin of small business."
Linda was also adamant that increasing levels of outsourcing software, web development, and other IT jobs to India, China, and Russia is a serious threat to the viability of local technology firms. "Local, state, and federal officials have acknowledged the need to increase operational efficiencies as a way of cutting costs. Silicon Valley firms are prime resources to help manifest these efficiency gains. Let's help each other, and keep Silicon Valley working."
The panelists fielded questions from the approximate 125 summit participants,
and closed with comments from Congressman Honda, appreciative of
the insights and committed to working to make the investments necessary
to keep this Valley alive and thriving.
