Quote of the Month:

"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."
--Mark Twain

Question of the Month

Q: How do I get my website to come up at the top of the list when customers search for my type of product/service?

A: Two of the more popular ways to get your site to appear at or near the top of the search engine rankings include:

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Using Adwords to stimulate lead generation

The first article in our series on Search Engine Optimization features ways to boost your search engine rankings organically. Alternatively, certain paid search engine programs can be just as effective.

Google Adwords and Overture are forms of search-engine advertising that return high rankings on a search page when a user searches for a topic, product, or service. For example, if you sell Ford Mustangs, you would want your dealership to appear at the top of the rankings each time someone searches "Ford Mustang." Better yet, if you sell Ford Mustangs in Mt. View, California, you would profit from a search like "Ford Mustang Mt. View". By bidding on search engine ads using terms that contain a location, your site could appear at the top spot of folks looking for your product or service in your geographic area.

Search marketing seems to be "owned" by two major players:

  • Google claims about half of the search market
  • Overture, which includes MSN, Yahoo, Alta Vista, Lycos and others, captures the other half of the search market.

To be effective, you'll need to appear on both search engines, where customers can easily find your site.

Stay tuned, and in our next issue, we'll give you some techniques on how to get started using keyword ad placement (or if you'd like to find out more quickly, call M3iworks at (408) 293-9654 x841 and our staff will be ready to help).
